The ability to organise, anticipate and make decisions under pressure is essential to leadership.<\/p>

Businesses rely on leaders who can bring order to complexity.<\/p>

Teams look to them for direction.<\/p>

Investors seek confidence.<\/p>

Employees value consistency.<\/p>

In many ways, leadership requires a degree of control.<\/p>

Without it, organisations drift.<\/p>

But there is an important distinction between exercising control and needing control.<\/p>

One is a leadership skill.<\/p>

Leadership asks us to make decisions with incomplete information.<\/p>

No strategy is guaranteed.<\/p>

Yet many leaders quietly carry an impossible expectation:<\/p>

\u201cIf I work hard enough, think carefully enough or prepare thoroughly enough, I can eliminate uncertainty.\u201d<\/p>

It is an understandable belief.<\/p>

Control offers reassurance.<\/p>

Planning reduces anxiety.<\/p>

These are valuable qualities.<\/p>

Control rarely begins in the boardroom.<\/p>

For many people, it develops much earlier.<\/p>

Sometimes control emerges in environments where life felt unpredictable.<\/p>

Sometimes it grows from experiences where mistakes carried significant consequences.<\/p>

Sometimes it becomes a way of managing anxiety or protecting against disappointment.<\/p>

Order creates safety.<\/p>

Preparation reduces vulnerability.<\/p>

Being organised helps life feel manageable.<\/p>

These are intelligent adaptations.<\/p>

They often help people succeed academically, professionally and personally.<\/p>

Indeed, many successful leaders have been rewarded precisely because they think ahead, anticipate problems and remain composed under pressure.<\/p>

The challenge is not that these qualities exist.<\/p>

The challenge is when they become the only way we know how to feel secure.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

When control becomes part of our psychological architecture, it begins to influence every aspect of leadership.<\/p>

Delegation becomes difficult.<\/p>

Rest becomes surprisingly uncomfortable because there is always something else that could be checked, improved or anticipated.<\/p>

From the outside, this often appears as dedication.<\/p>

From the inside, it can feel like vigilance.<\/p>

A constant scanning for what might go wrong next.<\/p>

Many leaders describe it as never quite being able to switch off.<\/p>

Even in moments of success, the mind has already moved on to the next challenge.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Ironically, the more senior a leader becomes, the less control they actually possess.<\/p>

Markets shift.<\/p>

People make unexpected decisions.<\/p>

Economic conditions change.<\/p>

Competitors emerge.<\/p>

Life refuses to follow even the best strategic plan.<\/p>

The leaders who flourish over time are not necessarily those who control the most.<\/p>

They are often those who develop the capacity to remain thoughtful when control is no longer possible.<\/p>

This is not passive acceptance.<\/p>

It is psychological flexibility.<\/p>

The ability to distinguish between what belongs within our influence and what never truly did.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

For some leaders, the idea of letting go feels deeply uncomfortable.<\/p>

It can sound like lowering standards or becoming less committed.<\/p>

In reality, the opposite is often true.<\/p>

Letting go is not about caring less.<\/p>

It is about recognising the limits of what any one person can carry.<\/p>

It allows trust to replace constant supervision.<\/p>

Curiosity to replace defensiveness.<\/p>

Collaboration to replace isolation.<\/p>

Perhaps most importantly, it creates room for people around us to grow.<\/p>

A leader who must control everything eventually limits both themselves and their team.<\/p>

The most psychologically resilient leaders are rarely those who feel completely in control.<\/p>

They are those who no longer need to be.<\/p>

They understand that leadership is not about eliminating uncertainty.<\/p>

It is about remaining steady within it.<\/p>

Their confidence comes not from believing that nothing will go wrong, but from trusting their capacity to respond thoughtfully when it does.<\/p>

This kind of leadership feels different.<\/p>

It is calmer.<\/p>

Less driven by fear.<\/p>

Less concerned with protecting an image of competence.<\/p>

More able to listen.<\/p>

More able to adapt.<\/p>

The question is not whether you value control.<\/p>

The question is whether control has become the only place where you feel secure.<\/p>

Because the strongest leaders are not those who control everything.<\/p>
