Trust has become one of the most frequently used words in leadership.<\/p>

We ask leaders to build trust with their teams.<\/p>

Organisations invest in trust-building programmes.<\/p>

Employees consistently identify trust as one of the qualities they value most in those they follow.<\/p>

Yet trust is often treated as a behaviour.<\/p>

Be transparent.<\/p>

Communicate clearly.<\/p>

Keep your promises.<\/p>

These are important.<\/p>

But they are the visible expressions of something much deeper.<\/p>

Trust is not simply what we do.<\/p>

Long before we lead organisations, we begin learning what relationships feel like.<\/p>

Can people be relied upon?<\/p>

Is vulnerability met with understanding or criticism?<\/p>

Is asking for help safe?<\/p>

Do mistakes strengthen relationships or threaten them?<\/p>

These experiences quietly influence the assumptions we carry into adulthood.<\/p>

Not as conscious decisions.<\/p>

But as expectations.<\/p>

Some people learn that others are dependable.<\/p>

Others discover that relying on people brings disappointment.<\/p>

Some conclude that strength means handling everything alone.<\/p>

Others become highly attuned to meeting everyone else\u2019s needs while leaving little room for their own.<\/p>

Many senior leaders are exceptionally trustworthy.<\/p>

They honour commitments.<\/p>

Protect their teams.<\/p>

Deliver under pressure.<\/p>

Remain dependable in difficult circumstances.<\/p>

Ironically, these same leaders often struggle to trust others in return.<\/p>

Delegation becomes difficult.<\/p>

Not because colleagues lack ability.<\/p>

But because allowing someone else to carry responsibility creates discomfort.<\/p>

Control feels safer than uncertainty.<\/p>

Self-reliance feels safer than dependence.<\/p>

Over time, leadership can become increasingly lonely.<\/p>

Not because trustworthy people are absent.<\/p>

Every act of trust involves uncertainty.<\/p>

There is no guarantee that another person will understand us perfectly.<\/p>

\n\t\t\t\t

Trust asks us to tolerate something uncomfortable.<\/p>

The possibility that things may not unfold exactly as we hope.<\/p>

For leaders accustomed to carrying responsibility, this can feel particularly challenging.<\/p>

If everything depends on us, trusting others may feel irresponsible.<\/p>

Yet organisations cannot grow without it.<\/p>

Much has been written about creating psychological safety within teams.<\/p>

Often the conversation focuses on encouraging others to speak openly.<\/p>

There is another question worth considering.<\/p>

How psychologically safe does the leader feel?<\/p>

Can they acknowledge uncertainty?<\/p>

Can they admit they do not know?<\/p>

Can they ask for help?<\/p>

Can they change their mind without experiencing it as failure?<\/p>

When leaders feel they must always appear certain, teams quickly learn to protect themselves in the same way.<\/p>

Curiosity gives way to caution.<\/p>

Innovation gives way to compliance.<\/p>

Real conversations become increasingly rare.<\/p>

Trust grows not because leaders appear flawless.<\/p>

But because they demonstrate that being fully human is compatible with effective leadership.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Perhaps the deepest form of trust is not only trusting others.<\/p>

It is learning to trust ourselves.<\/p>

Not in the sense of believing we will never make mistakes.<\/p>

But trusting our capacity to respond thoughtfully when we do.<\/p>

Many leaders spend years trying to eliminate uncertainty before making decisions.<\/p>

Yet confidence rarely grows from certainty.<\/p>

It grows from repeated experiences of navigating uncertainty with integrity.<\/p>

Self-trust develops in much the same way.<\/p>

Not by always being right.<\/p>

But by discovering that we remain fundamentally intact even when things do not unfold as planned.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

There is a quiet paradox at the heart of leadership.<\/p>

The more senior people become, the easier it is to be admired.<\/p>

The harder it often becomes to be known.<\/p>

Roles replace relationships.<\/p>

Performance replaces authenticity.<\/p>

Competence becomes the language through which identity is expressed.<\/p>

Yet genuine trust requires something more.<\/p>

It asks us to allow others to encounter the person behind the position.<\/p>

Not every thought.<\/p>

Not every emotion.<\/p>

Leadership still requires judgement and boundaries.<\/p>

But enough authenticity that people experience a real human being rather than a carefully maintained role.<\/p>

Paradoxically, this often strengthens authority rather than weakening it.<\/p>

Because people rarely trust perfection.<\/p>

Every leader builds an architecture of trust.<\/p>

Brick by brick.<\/p>

Conversation by conversation.<\/p>

Decision by decision.<\/p>

The question is not whether people trust you.<\/p>

The deeper question is whether you have built a way of leading that also allows you to trust.<\/p>

To trust your team.<\/p>

To trust your relationships.<\/p>

To trust your own judgement.<\/p>

And perhaps, most importantly, to trust that you no longer need to carry every uncertainty alone.<\/p>

Because leadership is not sustained by control.<\/p>

It is sustained by relationships.<\/p>
